Company description
SHEAR-TEST Bulk Solids Laboratory is your specialised partner for measuring the physical properties of powders and bulk solids. With over 30 years of industry experience, we offer sound expertise and reliable measurement services.
Over three decades of bulk solids experience
Markus Bloß, owner of SHEAR-TEST, began his professional career in bulk solids technology over 30 years ago at Deutsche Montan Technologie. There he developed evaluation software for test silos and first investigated the relationship between flow properties and rheological measurement data.
Alongside his studies in process engineering, he worked closely with one of the leading fundamental researchers in bulk solids technology. He was responsible for automating the measuring instruments for physical bulk solids analysis, further developed the evaluation software, prepared technical documentation and contributed to the development of ASTM standards.
A further focus was international customer support – from the installation and commissioning of the measuring instruments worldwide to technical service on site – as well as the optimisation of silo designs and discharge floors in practice.
Measurement services since 2005
Since 2005 we have offered the measurements as contract measurements – since then in more than 500 projects for customers all over the world, many of them regular customers. We support companies from a wide range of industries in designing their plants and solving flow problems.

Measurement services and liability
Our bulk solids measurements are carried out according to recognised technical standards, professionally and to the best of our knowledge and belief. The bulk solids measurements for yield locus, wall friction, compression density and time consolidation are carried out on standardised shear testers to ASTM D6682. Further measurements such as the determination of the angle of repose, sieve analysis and moisture determination are carried out according to the respective recognised methods. The measurement results reflect the physical properties of the samples tested at the time of measurement.
Scope and limits: The measurement results apply to the samples tested under the respective test conditions. Deviations in material composition, particle size distribution, moisture or other properties can subsequently influence the flow parameters. For critical applications or safety-relevant structures, additional investigations and a qualified engineering assessment by a competent designer are required.
Calculation methods: The calculation methods used are partly based on proven empirical approaches and simplifying assumptions. They serve for initial assessment and orientation. For the final silo design, e.g. to EN 1991-4, detailed structural design by a qualified structural engineer, taking into account all relevant load cases and safety concepts, is indispensable.
Safety notes: For safety-relevant applications (e.g. protection of persons, environmental protection, critical infrastructure), the measurement results must be assessed by a competent engineer. Responsibility for the application of the results and compliance with applicable safety regulations lies with the client or the design engineer.
Liability: Liability for indirect and direct damage resulting from the application of the measurement results is excluded to the extent permitted by law. This does not apply to damage resulting from injury to life, body or health or to damage resulting from intentional or grossly negligent breaches of duty.
